Review - Smashbox Photo Finish Light Foundation Primer

Hey guys!

Today I have a makeup post for you!
I've been trying to include more makeup posts in my lineup but I'm finding that I'm buying less and less makeup as the time goes on and I'm buying more and more nail polish instead. However I still have a bunch of makeup that I've stockpiled over the years so I'll try to swatch and review some of those products for you.

Today's product is the Smashbox Photo Finish Light Foundation Primer and I have been using this particular product for about 2 years now so I think I have enough experience with it to be able to provide an honest review.

Here's a description of the product from the Smashbox website:

"Our oil-free, 60% water-based primer is ideal for oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin. This silky blend of vitamins and antioxidants helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores for visibly softer skin, and can be worn alone or under foundation to increase its longevity. The revolutionary formula has oil absorbers for a smooth matte finish all day, light diffusers to minimize the appearance of imperfections, and vitamin C and peptides to help even skin tone and promote collagen production for a flawless future. Now in a sleek tube for perfect dispensing—down to the last drop!
Winner of Allure Magazine's Best of Beauty Award for Best Primer."

Since I already mentioned that I've been using this product for a couple of years, you can assume that I've repurchased it and therefore that I like it. So what do I like about it?

The main thing that I love about this product is that it does a phenomenal job of controlling my oily skin all day long. Before I started using this I had to carry those oil blotting sheets around with me in my purse but I haven't had to use a single one of those since I started using this primer. I also never have to touch up my makeup throughout the day when I use this. In fact, I no longer even carry my face powder with me in my purse since I just don't need it.

As you can see from the photo above, I'm almost done with this bottle so over the last couple of weeks I have been trying to conserve this by only using it on days when I know it's going to be really hot out or for days when I know I'm going to be out for a long time. I can safely say that on the days when I haven't used this before applying my foundation, I can definitely see a different in the oiliness of my skin when I get home.

I do have sensitive skin and any change in products can cause me to break out but this has never caused that so I can safely say that it's ok to use on sensitive skin.

This also helps in foundation application in that it provides a nice, smooth surface for my foundation to glide over and it definitely makes application easier. Furthermore, the finish of my foundation looks better in the end than it does when I don't use this primer.

My one and only problem with this product is the price - the bottle you see in the photo costs $44 CDN which is very pricey, especially for those on a limited makeup budget and/or for those who want an everyday foundation primer that will aid in oil control. I usually try to wait until Shopper's Drug Mart has a sale or points event (where spending earns you points which can later be used as cash value) to buy this so that I'm at least getting something extra out of my purchase.

However, this does last a good 4-5 months even with everyday use so although it seems like a big purchase, you get a lot of product for the money and it lasts longer than any other primer I've tried (and believe me, I've tried a lot of foundation primers).

Despite the price, I continue to repurchase this product because it has so many good qualities that I look for in a foundation primer.

The Photo Finish line of foundation primers also comes in 7 other formulas so if you don't have oily skin like myself but you're still in the market for a good foundation primer, check out the rest of the Photo Finish line on Smashbox's website.

What do you guys think of this primer? What's your go-to foundation primer?

  1. I use Gosh foundation primer (I am from Norway), but this was a really great review. I don't know if they have this one in Norway, so I don't know if I will be able to try it, but it certainly sounds interesting=D

  2. I've been looking for a new primer, I might try this next. I've been looking at Smashbox's primers and haven't decided on which one I want yet.

  3. Well the good news about oil skin is it stays looking younger longer.

I have similar problems when changing cleaners or my facial routine so I don't wear make-up often if ever.

I am curious? What do you use as a sun screen on your skin? The vast majority of sun screens cause me to break out, but I would really like to wear one.
