I recently picked up the first half (01-08) of the Layla Hologram Effects Collection and I couldn't wait to share them with you! So get your bibs ready and back away from your keyboard because these puppies are totally drool-worthy!
Swatches and the review after the jump!
For each shade I have two pictures for you - one in natural lighting and one with flash so that you can really see the holographic effect. The awesome thing about these shades is that the holo effect is so strong that even in natural lighting, it's still peeking through in most of the colours.
Also, I didn't use any sort of aqua fix base coat for these swatches. They're just done on my bare nails. Layla recommends using a buffing file to smooth out any ridges in your nail beds to ensure a smooth application. My nails are generally pretty ridge-less so I skipped that step, but it might be useful if you have any imperfections that you don't want showing through the polish. However, go easy with the buffer because too much buffing can weaken your nails.
And although most times I show my swatches with top coat, these ones are without it. That's simply because top coat dulls the holo effect for a couple of minutes while it's drying, and I didn't want to wait after each swatch. But yes, the holo effect did return to full power once the top coat dried.
Ok enough babbling, on to the swatches!
01 Mercury Twilight is the essential silver holo of the collection. This is by far the most holographic of all the silver holos I own. As with most of the others, I needed three coats for full coverage.
02 Coral Glam is a nude pink-tan colour. This one didn't do much for me in the bottle, but it's amazing once on!
03 Retro Pink is a medium pink. This was the only one that gave me application troubles for some reason. Maybe I didn't shake it up enough? Or maybe it needed a little nail polish thinner? Anyways, it was a little patchy on the first coat, but it did even itself out once I got to the third coat.
04 Ultra Violet is a medium blue-based purple. This one is actually a really good alternative to the long discontinued and hard to find OPI DS Original! So if that's on your wishlist, you may want to consider this one instead.
05 Jade Groove is a pale jade green. In the bottle, I thought the colour was going to be too light and sort of boring, but boy was I wrong! There's nothing boring about this.
06 Mermaid Spell is a light sky blue. This is definitely the most holo blue that I own by a long shot. So pretty.
07 Ocean Rush is a medium royal blue. As I expected, this one stole my heart right away. Although the holo isn't quite as strong as it is with the others, it's still gorgeous.
08 Flash Black is the essential black holo. I think I could wear this for the rest of my life. The holo is so powerful! So much so that it almost satiates my desire to own the original OPI My Private Jet. Almost.
I seriously can't get enough of holographic nail polish. Especially when they're done like this.
I actually got these at a drugstore that only has locations in Atlantic Canada, and I got them on sale for $4.99 each! What a steal, right?! The hoarder in me is yelling to go back and get more because it's such a good price, but my logical side tells me that I only need one of each, haha.
They can also be purchased from online shops such as Ninja Polish and Harlow & Co.
Have you picked up any of the Layla Hologram Effect shades? Which is/are your favourite(s)? I definitely need to get my hands on the other eight shades!
