Review & Swatches - Layla Hologram Effect Collection (01-08)

Hi guys!

I recently picked up the first half (01-08) of the Layla Hologram Effects Collection and I couldn't wait to share them with you! So get your bibs ready and back away from your keyboard because these puppies are totally drool-worthy!

Swatches and the review after the jump!

For each shade I have two pictures for you - one in natural lighting and one with flash so that you can really see the holographic effect. The awesome thing about these shades is that the holo effect is so strong that even in natural lighting, it's still peeking through in most of the colours.

Also, I didn't use any sort of aqua fix base coat for these swatches. They're just done on my bare nails. Layla recommends using a buffing file to smooth out any ridges in your nail beds to ensure a smooth application. My nails are generally pretty ridge-less so I skipped that step, but it might be useful if you have any imperfections that you don't want showing through the polish. However, go easy with the buffer because too much buffing can weaken your nails.

And although most times I show my swatches with top coat, these ones are without it. That's simply because top coat dulls the holo effect for a couple of minutes while it's drying, and I didn't want to wait after each swatch. But yes, the holo effect did return to full power once the top coat dried.

Ok enough babbling, on to the swatches!

01 Mercury Twilight is the essential silver holo of the collection. This is by far the most holographic of all the silver holos I own. As with most of the others, I needed three coats for full coverage.

02 Coral Glam is a nude pink-tan colour. This one didn't do much for me in the bottle, but it's amazing once on!

03 Retro Pink is a medium pink. This was the only one that gave me application troubles for some reason. Maybe I didn't shake it up enough? Or maybe it needed a little nail polish thinner? Anyways, it was a little patchy on the first coat, but it did even itself out once I got to the third coat.

04 Ultra Violet is a medium blue-based purple. This one is actually a really good alternative to the long discontinued and hard to find OPI DS Original! So if that's on your wishlist, you may want to consider this one instead.

05 Jade Groove is a pale jade green. In the bottle, I thought the colour was going to be too light and sort of boring, but boy was I wrong! There's nothing boring about this.

06 Mermaid Spell is a light sky blue. This is definitely the most holo blue that I own by a long shot. So pretty.

07 Ocean Rush is a medium royal blue. As I expected, this one stole my heart right away. Although the holo isn't quite as strong as it is with the others, it's still gorgeous.

08 Flash Black is the essential black holo. I think I could wear this for the rest of my life. The holo is so powerful! So much so that it almost satiates my desire to own the original OPI My Private Jet. Almost.

I seriously can't get enough of holographic nail polish. Especially when they're done like this.

I actually got these at a drugstore that only has locations in Atlantic Canada, and I got them on sale for $4.99 each! What a steal, right?! The hoarder in me is yelling to go back and get more because it's such a good price, but my logical side tells me that I only need one of each, haha.

They can also be purchased from online shops such as Ninja Polish and Harlow & Co.

Have you picked up any of the Layla Hologram Effect shades? Which is/are your favourite(s)? I definitely need to get my hands on the other eight shades!

  3. I just bought 10-Emerald Divine and 14-Cloudy Violet last week. They came in the post yesterday, haven't had chance to try them out yet but even in the bottle they both look fantastic! Unfortunately they are nowhere near that cheap over here in the UK but still well worth the money

  6. Wow! What a steal! I have to Layla holos...Retro Pink (which I haven't worn yet) and Misty Blush (I think that's the name?) which I absolutely looooove! There are so, so many more that I want to get though! Paying $15 makes me want to cry though. If I saw them for $5 I would die and buy them all!

  10. They're gorgeous. I own Ocean Rush, but I'm not very good friends with it at the moment, so it sits in a box, waiting until it behaves! :D

  11. Lawton's? My boyfriend is from Nova Scotia and when we visited his family last summer I went to a Lawton's specifically for polish! I wish we had them out west!

  17. I had no idea Laylas were sold at any drugstores...let alone finding 'em on sale! Stuff like this never makes it into my area where I live - it's too rural. I went to 1 Ulta store while out of town and bought my first 2 Layla polishes ever! In looking at these holos, I have dups for most of them - but this black holo I agree it a stunner. I only have the black holo from the Jade line and it's not as pretty as this Layla one.

  18. All of them are beautiful! I like particularly Flash Black and Ultra Violet!

  19. Ha, after picking all the colours up I wanted, I went back and grabbed backups of Mercury Twilight and Flash Black -- they're my first holos, so I figured $5 isn't much to pay for a few backups. Lawtons is so fantastic; they have Layla's Cavier Effect and Bubbly Effect collections now, and while I'm not that interested in either, I'm impressed because they're pretty quirky collections for a drug store to stock.

    1. I saw those while I was there as well! I'm interested in trying the Bubbly Effect polishes, but not at the $16 price tag.

  20. Awwww that MEME, it's meeeeeeee!!!!!!! :D
I'm usually grabbing every holo polish I see. I took only two among these, because -even if it is an Italian brand- Layla polishes here in Italy are really really expensive.

  21. If you use an aqua base or the Layla file these will be even more amazingly holo!

  29. hi :) i am a new reader, and i love your reviews! i've been looking over your holo posts, because i am on a search for something comparable to Pupa's Strawberry Holo. I was willing to drop the $35 for the polish from an Italian e-store, but none of them ship to the US and I can't find it anywhere else. Do you know of any holos in the US that are the same color? I'm thinking about the nfu-oh #62 right now.

Here's the Pupa Strawberry if you've not seen it. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/AmyGraceTPP/PupaHolographicStrawberry.jpg

    Thank you! :)
